PRESENTATION

Greg Maddaford, Senior Inspector, Safe Work NSW

 Topic:        Critical Developing effective SOPs/JSEAs/SWMSs

But…, I gave the Inspector our SOP/JSEA/SWMS for the task.  Why are they looking at me like I’ve given them the list of things I need to pick up at the supermarket on the way home tonight!

One of the most common shortcomings I come across when dealing with workplace incidents or complaints is the quality of a company’s SOPs, JSEAs, or SWMSs.  Where these documents usually fall short is that they are not specific to the activity being performed, the way the machine is being used, or the unique characteristics of the site.

A manufacturer’s operating manual may not be an adequate SOP/JSEA. A generic SWMS for an activity is most often not the site and task specific SWMS that is needed.  This presentation will focus on the advantages of ensuring your SOPs/JSEAs/SWMSs are anchored on a detailed Task Analysis of the activity or process.

Using case studies, we will go through the process of developing an effective document that allows a company to control the risks associated with an activity.
