Kirstyn Langhorne, Inspector, SafeWork NSW
Topic: Consultation, Health and Safety Representatives and Provisional Improvement Notices
Consultation provides an opportunity to use the knowledge and experience of your staff to achieve a safer and healthier workplace. Consultation is a legal requirement and an essential part of managing health and safety risks.
Consultation can occur in a variety of ways and can be quite flexible ranging from establishing a health and safety committee, having a health and safety representative/s (HSR), or through other agreed arrangements.
This presentation will explore the legal requirements for consultation and the varying options which can be implemented within the workplace. In particular, we will focus on the role of a HSR, the processes required to be followed if a request for HSR’s is received including work group negotiation, elections, training, and the ability of Health and Safety to issue provisional improvement notices.
